DevLog #005: Reworking Falkreach with Godot
A major technology shift to speed up development and expand platform support.

Welcome to DevLog #005 for Falkreach!
It's been almost two months since the last update. While things may have seemed quiet from the outside, development has been very active behind the scenes. Most of that time was spent on refactoring, experimenting, and making an important long-term decision for the future of the game.
When I started Falkreach, the goal was to create a browser-based MMORPG that could be played on both desktop and mobile devices. While this approach worked, it also meant building and maintaining many systems from scratch—not just gameplay features, but also development tools such as map editors, quest creation systems, and various content management utilities.
As development progressed, it became clear that a significant amount of time was being spent reinventing solutions that already exist in mature game engines.
Because of that, I've decided to migrate Falkreach from its custom-built engine to Godot.
Although this means reimplementing some existing features and learning new workflows, the benefits are substantial. Godot dramatically increases development speed by providing a robust set of built-in tools, editors, and systems that would otherwise take months to create and maintain.
This change also opens up exciting opportunities for the future of Falkreach. Instead of being limited to the browser, the game can now be distributed as a native application on multiple platforms, including:
- Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Apple App Store (iOS)
- Google Play Store (Android)
- Steam
The migration is still ongoing, and many features are not yet implemented in the new client. However, progress has been encouraging, and a playable nightly build is already available for testing.
If you'd like to help shape the future of Falkreach, I'd love to hear your feedback.
